Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pan

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish or lightly coat it with nonstick cooking spray.

  1. Combine the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

  1. Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and honey until combined.

  1. Make the Batter

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir just until everything comes together. Don't overmix—a few small lumps are fine.

  1. Bake

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

  1. Cool & Serve

Let the cornbread cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with butter and an extra drizzle of honey, if desired.

Homemade Cornbread Tips

Don't overmix: Stir the batter only until the dry ingredients are incorporated. Overmixing can make the cornbread tougher instead of soft and tender.

Check it early: Start checking around 20 minutes. Remove it once the center is baked through so the cornbread stays moist.

Adjust the sweetness: For a less-sweet cornbread, reduce the granulated sugar to 1/4 cup.

Serve it warm: Golden Honey Butter Cornbread is especially good served slightly warm with softened butter and a little honey.

Storage: Keep leftover cornbread covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Freezing: Cool completely, then wrap individual pieces and freeze in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Serving Tip

Serve this homemade cornbread alongside BBQ Pork and Sweet & Tangy Homestyle Coleslaw for an easy BBQ-style family dinner. On cooler nights, pair it with our Farmhouse Slow Cooker Chili for a warm and hearty meal. It's also great with chili, soup, pulled pork, or grilled chicken.

Make It Gluten-Free

This recipe is not gluten-free as written because it contains all-purpose flour.

A 1-to-1 gluten-free baking flour may work in place of the all-purpose flour, but since we haven't tested that substitution, I wouldn't promise identical results yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:

Can I make homemade cornbread ahead of time?

Yes. Bake it a day ahead and keep it tightly covered. You can warm individual pieces briefly before serving.

Why is my cornbread dry?

Overbaking is a common cause. Start checking around 20 minutes and remove it once a toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Can I make this cornbread less sweet?

Yes. Reduce the granulated sugar from 1/3 cup to 1/4 cup.

Can I bake it in a cast-iron skillet?

Yes. A well-greased 9-inch cast-iron skillet should work well. Start checking it early because the edges may brown more quickly.

Can I freeze homemade cornbread?

Yes. Cool it completely, wrap individual pieces well, and freeze for up to 3 months.
